In the past few years people have started using DVDs more than cds. The main reason is DVD has more storage capacity than a CD, while occupying the same shelve space. Moreover, storing any videos in a DVD will result in much better quality than the same matter in a CD. Besides videos, we can even store data on DVDs. To ensure that the data remains original and uncorrupted, we should always use copy protected DVDs.

To write a DVD, the basic hardware needed is a DVD writing drive, commonly called a DVD writer, that is used to write data to DVDs. Of the many makes of DVD writers in the market, Sony and Samsung are perhaps the most popular. Personally, I prefer to go with Samsung, for its quality as well as affordability.

We can burn DVDs to create backups of our important data. This takes some time and effort but it is useful. We can store important data in a DVD, as the hard disk being magnetic in nature, may develop a snag or a problem at any point of time, such as a Hard Disk crash. Thus we need to store our important data’s on DVDs as a backup.

Amongst the various types of DVDs, the latest in the DVDs is the double layered DVD. We can store more data in this type of DVDs, as it stores data on both sides, hence has double the capacity of an ordinary DVD, the storage capacity going up to as high as 17 GB. Compare this with the floppy drives of just a few years ago, when 1.44 Mb was considered the ultimate mobile storage media, and you would realize just how much we have progressed.

Most originally produced DVDs are copy protected DVDs. This is to prevent stealing of data from the DVDs, so the original producer does not lose money to piracy. On the other hand, there are several software available that can still duplicate any DVD, however protected it may be. Not all are legal, but they remain hugely popular anyways.

“One of the big advantages to outsourcing is flexibility–it can be a lot easier to cut back on a vendor than an employee. (Think of how you would feel if you had to tell an employee who is dependent on their job that you only need them half-time now….
