Paying full price at a local retail store for a DVD, it should be simple to make a back up copy and protect your investment-right? Wrong! When DVDs first came out, some not-so-honest individuals figure out a way to make a few bucks on the side. Ignoring the law, copies are being sold for a fraction of the legal selling price. Still others made copies and gave them away to friends and family. So, businesses began safeguarding their products, and now people need to know how to copy a copyrighted DVD.

First, understand I in no way condone making illegal copies and ignoring the law. However, if the product has been purchased through the normal channels, I see no reason why a consumer should not be able to make a copy for personal use.

Fortunately, DVD ripping software is available. Customers can purchase the products online. Generally, the programs are consumer friendly and fairly easy to use. Some programs claim to be based on a one-click process. However, it can still be a challenge to make a copy, if you do not know what to do.

The problem is in the encrypting and shrinking of software. Basically, the DVDs are written with lots of little roadblocks installed to prevent duplication. Plus, the files have been shrunk to fit on one or two DVDs, rather than four or more.

Therefore, the first step is to strip the encryption and place the data on the computer’s hard drive. Once on the computer, the file will seem huge. However, now is the time to get rid of any superfluous files having nothing to do with the video.

Once cleaned up, consumers need to download shrinking software, to return the files to a manageable size. The program for shrinking can be found free of charge or at a very reasonable rate. So, once the files have been downsized, it is finally time to make the backup copy.

Although the process necessary to copy a copyrighted DVD sounds time consuming and confusing, it will get easier with practice. In addition, it will definitely save money in the long run. Now, people do not have to worry about watching a favorite movie too much, or freak out when the discs accidentally meet an untimely demise. Watch and enjoy worry free.
