How do I copy movie DVDs? Such a simple question deserves an equally simple answer. It should be as easy as buying a blank disc and copying from one to the other. Oh, if anything in life was that simple!

Unfortunately, when DVDs first came out, some industrious, and not equally honest folks, decided to make copies of a purchased movie and sell the pirated software to friends, family, and whoever wanted to save a few bucks. If it had only been one of two people it might not have turned into a big deal. However, it does not take much smarts to copy a full disc to a blank one. So, it became a copyright infringement epidemic.

Naturally, companies began losing money on sales. With profits going down, something has to give. Either the problem needs to be resolved or lots of people will be out of business and out of a job. The old adage that “what they do not know will not hurt them” is not exactly true. Before the bigwigs go down, it is the worker at the bottom of the food chain that will be laid off and not have the money to buy food and pay rent.

So, in order to save businesses, programmers are hired to come up with a plan to make it difficult, if not impossible, to make duplicates of movies. Thus, all of your entertainment software purchased is encrypted to make it copy proof.

Although I am not in any way condoning copyright infringement, there is a way to copy a movie for the sole purpose of having a backup. It requires decrypting software, a connection between the player and the computer, some shrinking software, and a blank disc to make the final copy.

In truth, the answer to the question regarding how I copy movie DVDs is more dependent upon having the right resources and the patience to go through the process. All of the software programs needed to complete the task is available. It will probably take some time to get the steps down. But, after you have made a couple of copies, it should be a fairly easy process and well worth the cost saving effort.
